1988 Golf Cabrio GTI

Mechanical Restoration

The primary challenge was a non-starting engine caused by a severely compromised fuel system.

  • Fuel System Overhaul: The original petrol tank was "absolutely jiggered" and full of rust and "crud" [09:28]. The team replaced the entire fuel tank, the lift pump, and the main fuel pump to ensure proper pressure (6 bar) reached the injection system [08:14], [10:22].
  • Injection System Service: The fuel injectors were serviced with new O-rings and rubber seals to ensure a perfect fine-mist spray pattern [09:58].
  • Full Engine Service: Once running, the team performed a comprehensive service, including replacing the cam belt to prevent potential engine damage [17:01].
  • Leak Repairs: Several oil leaks were addressed, and a new cam cover gasket was fitted [16:48].
  • Accelerator Repair: The accelerator cable and pedal assembly were repaired after the pedal repeatedly fell to the floor during initial start-up attempts [06:15].

Structural & Body Work

Despite being a "very straight genuine car," the body required precision repairs in common problem areas.

  • Windscreen Surround Repair: The team removed the windscreen to repair a small but critical area of rot found just underneath the glass [03:48], [17:15].
  • Paintwork: After filling and priming the repaired area, a localised paint job was performed around the windscreen frame to match the rest of the "mint" bodywork [17:38].
  • Underside Inspection: The team removed an old tow bar that had been incorrectly fastened near the petrol tank, confirming the rest of the chassis was "rock solid" [04:14].

Cosmetic Refinement

The car suffered from an "over-white" 80s aesthetic, which the team worked to tone down for a more classic look.

  • Grill & Trim Upgrades: The colour-coded white grill was replaced with a more traditional black unit, and the white wipers and door handles were also addressed to provide contrast [03:18], [14:39].
  • Interior Detailing: The seats and carpets were thoroughly scrubbed and hoovered to restore the "nice" original interior [17:44].
  • Exterior Finish: To bring the paint back to its former glory, the car was given a full machine polish, resulting in a "thing of beauty" [17:54].
